Ruwanweli Maha Seya

This is the Maha Seya near the Abhaya Wewa close to the Sri Maha Bodhi. This great stupa was built by Dutugemunu Narapathi in the 4th century AD and is 350 feet high. It is the third tallest dagoba in Sri Lanka.

This stupa which was started by King Dutugemunu with great interest has been constructed in the shape of a water bubble. The king was dying when the work on the square was completed. The rest of the work was done by his brother King Saddhatissa.

Inside the relic chamber is an eighty cubit gemstone bodhi tree and about a dozen sacred relics are treasured here. There is a stone paved courtyard around the dagoba and an ivory wall around it. Outside the ivory wall is a sand courtyard.

In the course of time, the restoration work of the dagoba at Valbi was completed. It was started around 1873 under the name of Sumanasara. In the year 1938, the Ruwanweli Stupa was completely renovated and the towers were installed. From then until today, as in the future, the circles will remain for a long time under the great care of the Mahasaya Buddhists.

My feeling is that if you are a great Buddhist, you should visit the Great Stupa at least once a month. Ruwanweliseya is considered to be the most powerful place in the universe. It is also a pleasure to be a creation of my country.

Thank You... 🙏
