Esala Festival

As Asala dawns on the full moon day, the full moon day called Esala is the great day that dawns after the Poya season. Its greatness can be explained by highlighting the events that have taken place in connection with the Esala Poya day.

The conception of Siddhartha Bodhisattva's womb, the birth of Prince Rahula and the ascension of the great Bodhisattvas took place on the full moon day of the Esala.

  • The Supreme Buddha preaching the first Dhamma sermon, the Damsak Prevathum Sutta, at Isipathana Migadaya in Baranasa.
  • The arrival of the Lord Buddha for the first time with the five monks took place with the payment of the Esala Poya Day.
  • At the base of the Buddhadun Gandabba tree, Yamaha rushes to break the theorists' dimension.
  • Seventh Poison Thavthisa Preaching the Abhidhamma to the Lord Buddha who ascended to heaven.
Commencement of preliminary work for the first Dhamma Sangayana in Rajagaha two months after the extinction of the  Buddha.

In addition to these important events that took place in Dabadiva, there are also several incidents that took place in Lakdiva.

  • After the arrival of Mahinda Thera in Sri Lanka, King Devanampiyatissa made eighty caves in the Mihintale rock in a month and offered them to them.
  • Restoration of the inaugural stone by King Dutugemunu for the construction of the Swarnamali Maha Chaithya.
Commencement of the annual 'Dalada Perahera' in the year 847 AD during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Meghawarna after the arrival of Princess Hemamala and the Tooth Prince in Sri Lanka.

Thus it is clear how important the Esala Poya day is. Esala Poya is important to the people for two main reasons. The Dalada Perahera and the Katina ceremony are the main events.
